How to Stay Healthy During the Holiday Season

Holiday dinner with family.

There’s a lot to love about the holiday season. Decorating you house, spending time with friends and family, eating mountains of food and following up with multiple slices of pie, singing carols and mingling with loved ones are just a few of the festivities that make the holidays so special and enjoyable. These same things that make them so enjoyable are also not good for your health. So, how exactly does one stay healthy during the holidays? Here are some tips provided by everyone here at Rosewood to staying healthy during the holidays:

  • Drink plenty of water

It’s always important to stay hydrated, but especially during the cold winter months. Everyone likes to have a glass of alcohol during those holiday family parties, so after you finish that glass- follow it up with a nice glass of water.

  • Eat slower

Eating your meals slower has been proven to help you pay more attention to your “fullness”. If you do this, you will feel more satisfied with a smaller portion. Try putting your utensil down between bites and take your time when chewing.

  • Plan physical activities around meals

Maybe after your first course gather the gang and play a healthy game of charades or have everyone go on a post-meal walk. If you think you’re just going to sit on the couch and watch tv you’re likely to eat more.

  • Make healthy food choices

Cook a healthy holiday meal and fill your plate. With a few simple tweaks you can indulge in your favorite holiday foods without packing on pounds. Maybe choose green beans instead of green bean casserole. Trade mashed potatoes with mashed sweet potatoes.

  • Make time for self-care

Don’t let the holiday madness take a toll on your mental health. Don’t put your needs on the back burner. Take some time while shopping or cooking your holiday meal for you. Relax.

If you are trying to lose weight during this holiday season, here are some tips that will help you stay on track:

  • Stick with your diet and exercise program
  • Don’t restrict food. It’s okay to indulge a little, but remember to do so in moderation
  • Try to drink water regularly throughout the day. This will help keep your hands busy and your stomach feeling full
  • Chew food slowly, your brain lags while eating so when you eat fast your stomach doesn’t realize this until too late
  • Try to reach for the healthier food options when you have the chance
